Most homeowners pay for a new roof in one of three ways: savings, financing, or a loan against their home. Some use a credit card for part of it. If the damage came from a covered event like a storm, talk to your insurance company. With us, you can pay over time. Financing is available at checkout, subject to approval.
What are the most common ways to pay for a roof?
Here are the five ways people use most. Many people mix two of them.
| Way to pay | How it works | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Cash or savings | You pay from money you already have. | No interest and no loan. But it can empty your rainy day fund. |
| Financing at checkout | You pay over time through a loan you apply for when you check out. | Subject to approval. Read the terms before you say yes. |
| Home equity loan or line of credit | You borrow against the value of your home, through your bank or credit union. | Your home is the backing for the loan. It can take a few weeks to set up. |
| Credit card | You put some or all of it on a card. | Fine if you pay it off fast. Card interest adds up quick if you carry a balance. |
| Insurance | If the damage is from a covered event, your insurance policy may pay for some of it. | Only your insurance company can tell you what your policy covers. |
Should I pay with cash or savings?
If you have the money, paying from savings is the simplest way. There is no loan to apply for and no interest to pay.
The catch is your safety net. Some people would rather keep their savings for an emergency and spread the roof out over time. There is no wrong answer.
How does roof financing work?
Financing lets you get the roof done now and pay for it over time. With us, it works like this:
- Free roof check. A roofer gets on your roof, takes photos and video, and texts them to you.
- Exact price. If you need a new roof, you get an exact price for your roof, in writing.
- Pick how to pay. When you are ready, you can choose financing at checkout. It is subject to approval. Most customers can see options in minutes.
Before you sign up for any loan, read the terms. Look at the monthly payment, how many months it lasts, and the total you will pay in the end. See how our roof financing works.
What about a home equity loan?
A home equity loan or a home equity line of credit lets you borrow against the part of your home you already own. You get it through a bank or a credit union, not through your roofer.
Keep two things in mind:
- Your house backs the loan. If you can not make the payments, your home is at risk.
- It takes time. There is often an application and an appraisal. That can take a few weeks. If your roof is leaking, ask your bank how long it will take.
Is it smart to put a roof on a credit card?
It can work if you pay the card off fast. Be careful if you will carry a balance. Card interest is often high, and it adds up month after month.
Will my insurance pay for a new roof?
That depends on your policy and on what caused the damage. If the damage came from a covered event, like a storm, talk to your insurance company or agent. They are the only ones who can tell you what your policy covers.
We do not handle insurance claims. What we can do is give you clear photos and video of your roof from the free roof check. You can share those with anyone you like.
When do I pay?
With us, you pay in two parts:
| When | How much | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Before materials are bought | 40% deposit | It covers buying and delivering your materials. |
| The day the roof is done | 60% | The rest, once the new roof is on and the yard is clean. |
You can pay the deposit by card or with financing. We also take ACH bank transfer and Zelle.
A good rule for any roofer: do not pay the whole job up front. A deposit for materials is normal. The rest should be due when the work is done. For more, see how to choose a roofer in Gaston County.
The short version
Savings is simplest. Financing lets you start now and pay over time, subject to approval. Home equity is a bank loan backed by your house. Credit cards work only if you pay them off fast. Insurance is a question for your insurance company.
