Best time of year to replace a roof in Gaston County

What each season means for a new roof in Gaston County, why shingles need warmth to seal, and why the best time is before your old roof starts leaking.

In Gaston County, fall is often the best time to replace a roof. The days are mild, and new shingles have time to seal before winter. Spring is a close second. Roofs here can go on most of the year, and the real best time is before your old roof starts to leak.

What is each season like for a new roof?

Season Weather here Good time for a new roof?
Spring Mild. Storms pick up, and hail in NC peaks in May. Yes. Book early, before storm season gets busy.
Summer Hot. Charlotte averages a high of 90.3°F in July. Pop-up storms. Yes. We start at 7am to beat the worst heat.
Fall Mild days, cooler nights. Often the best.
Winter January averages a high of 52°F and a low of 32°F. On milder days, yes, with extra care.

The temperatures above are National Weather Service normals for Charlotte. Hail timing is from the NC State Climate Office.

Why is fall often the best time?

  • Mild days. Easy on the crew and easy on the shingles.
  • Time to seal. New shingles have a sticky strip that seals in warm sun. In fall, there are still plenty of warm days for that.
  • Ready for winter. Your house goes into the cold months with a new roof.
  • Before the busy storm season. Spring and summer storms keep roofers busy.

Our season slows down in mid to late November, but work can run into January.

Why does temperature matter?

Each shingle has a strip on the back that seals it to the shingle below. That seal is what holds shingles down in wind.

GAF says the strip needs warmth, sun, and temperatures above 40°F to seal. Below that, the crew seals the shingles by hand with dabs of roofing cement. GAF says putting shingles on in the cold does not void its warranty if those cold-weather steps are followed.

Most winter days here warm up enough by midday. So a winter roof is doable. It just takes a little more care and a good forecast.

Can you replace a roof in summer?

Yes. Shingles seal fast in summer heat. The crew starts at 7am, and on most homes we are cleaned up by mid afternoon. Summer pop-up storms are the main thing to plan around. We only open up as much roof as we can cover that day, so your house stays dry.

What about after a big storm?

After a big storm, every roofer in the area gets busy at once. If your roof is old, it is easier to get on the schedule before a storm than after one. GAF even notes that roofing in the off-season can mean more contractor availability.

If a storm already hit, see our storm damage page.

Can a roof be replaced in the rain?

No. We do not tear off a roof when rain is coming. If the forecast turns, the date moves. That keeps your house dry.

So when should I replace my roof?

The best time is before it leaks. A leak shows up after water has already hit the wood. Then the job gets bigger, and you are on a storm's schedule instead of your own.

If your roof is 15 years old or more, get it checked now. Then pick the season that works for you.
